Description
This foundational course introduces learners to the basics of sign language communication, focusing on both vocabulary and the cultural aspects of the Deaf community. With a hands-on, visual learning approach, students will learn essential signs, fingerspelling, numbers, greetings, expressions, and common phrases used in everyday situations. Emphasis is placed on visual recognition, handshape accuracy, facial expressions, and body language—key elements in sign language that carry meaning and emotional context. The course also incorporates Deaf culture education to help learners understand social norms, history, values, and communication etiquette within the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Students will be exposed to real-life scenarios where sign language is used, and practice through video demonstrations, interactive assignments, and peer-based review. Learning outcomes include the ability to introduce oneself, hold basic conversations, and understand key elements of non-verbal communication. No prior experience is needed—this course is designed for beginners, educators, customer service professionals, and anyone who wishes to communicate inclusively and respectfully with Deaf individuals. Upon completion, students will have a strong foundation for further study in sign language and will be equipped to engage in meaningful, respectful interactions with the Deaf community.
